“Christians cannot be pessimists! They do not look like someone in constant mourning. If we are truly in love with Christ and if we sense how much he loves us, our heart will ‘light up’ with a joy that spreads to everyone around us.” POPE FRANCISCO
This tour was created to visit the most important “Basilicas” churches in Rome. We will visit two great ad important Basilicas as Saint Mary in Major and St. John in Lateran which is the mother of the Roman Churches and where we will see the “Scala Santa” (the “Holy Steps”) with footsteps of Jesus Christ. To complete our tour, we will visit St. Clemente Church and its underground, a true example of layers of Rome and we will discover how the churches have been changed during the centuries.
First, we will visit the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome, built in a place where, according to the legend, it started snowing on the 5th of August... We will see many beautiful frescoes and mosaics that will remain impressed in your eyes. Under the Basilica's altar lies the famous Crypt of the Nativity, which contains wood which came from the holy crib of Jesus Christ.
We will reach St. Clemente church and visit the “scavi” (the “excavations”): with four levels of buildings, shrines of two religions, artworks from the last 20 centuries, along with a subterranean street and some good old solid Roman engineering, San Clemente offers a unique history lesson about the many layers Rome has: walking through each one of these layers will be a true journey into the amazing architecture of Rome…
We will then reach the Basilica of Saint John in Lateran, well know as the Papal Archbasilica of Saint John in Lateran. It is the cathedral church of Rome and the official episcopal seat of the Bishop of Rome, the “Roman Pontiff”: amazing to see!
